CoStar - Center of Sexual Addiction Treatment and Recovery

Center of Sexual Treatment and Recovery specializes in the treatment of sexual addiction and co-addiction.

Sex addiction is a persistent and escalating pattern of sexual behaviors that result in negative consequences to self or others.

In the pursuit of a sexual high, the sex addict is willing to risk and damage his or her reputation, relationships, financial security, physical and emotional health.

Like alcohol for an alcoholic or cocaine for a drug abuser, sexual fantasies/behaviors, or compulsive relationships function as a drug for the sex and love addict. This produces a powerful euphoria, which is often followed by guilt and despair and a repetition of the addictive cycle. It is also an intimacy disorder that usually begins early in life and provides a way to cope with painful experiences in the absence of healthier skills.

Warning Signs:

  • Struggling to control or stop your sexual thoughts and behaviors.
  • Resorting to sex to escape, relieve anxiety or cope with problems.
  • Feeling guilty or shameful after engaging in sexual activities or fantasies.
  • Loss of relationships due to inability to stop sexual activities in or outside the relationship.
  • Putting self at risk for STD’s.
  • Losing time from work pursing sexual activities.
  • Lying about unaccounted time.
  • Pursing sexual activities online.

BEHAVIORS AN ADDICT MAY ENGAGE IN:

  • Cybersex (pornography, chat rooms, etc.)
  • Obsessive Fantasizing
  • Affairs
  • Voyeurism
  • Exhibitionism
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Power Position Relationships
  • Anonymous Sex
  • Child Molestation

Evaluation

An initial assessment and evaluation is conducted to determine if there is a sex addiction, the level of progression, other possible addictions, and mental health issues that may coexist. Additional assessments frequently include: Co-dependency Inventories, Chemical Dependency testing, Trauma Index, Cybersex/Computer Addiction Inventories, and Abel Screening. (Measures sexual interest.)

Psychotherapy

Ongoing individual and couple therapy provide healing from the effects of the addiction, learning new and healthier problem solving skills, resolving childhood traumas that may have fueled the addiction or co-addiction, and facilitating relationship recovery and growth.
